The Čuden House

The Čuden House

The house of a well-known Ljubljana watchmaker Franc Čuden was designed by architect Ciril Metod Koch. On the facade we can see blue and red round ceramic tiles, and above them there is a wave of wavy lines, while there is a gold ornament under the roof eave (the roof that extends beyond the walls of the building). These are typical Art Nouveau elements. We can also see them on the balcony fences that resemble plants. The corner of the building is emphasized by a tower that ends with a square plate on which there is a sphere surrounded by shields.

Ciril Metod Koch is also the author of a neighbouring building at the address of no. 1 Cigaletova, called Pogačnik’s house. There is a depiction of female figure holding plant tendrils above the entrance. Female figures were a very popular motif of depiction during the Art Nouveau period, which is reflected in paintings, sculptures and architectural works of the time.
