Nature – culture

The position of Bled, its favourable climate and fertile soil were the main reasons behind early human settlement already in the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Local inhabitants gradually began to exploit the environment and adapt it to improve the quality of their lives. Prior to human population, most of Bled and its surroundings were covered by forests which were bristling with a variety of animal species, including the moose. Its skeleton is on display in the showcase. The moose, now characteristic of Nordic countries, lived in the south-eastern Alps until the end of the Roman period. This illustrates the changing nature of local surroundings, in part caused by man and his development of agriculture exemplified by the variety of stone and metal farming tools on display in this room.
